I hadn’t seen the photo yet. Now I understand why it was referred to as “brown face.” Is that his wife he’s choking?

I wonder if blackface/brownface didn’t have the overtones of racial subjugation that it does, would this otherwise be considered just normal costuming?

Taking it further, as a guy of Mediterranean heritage with olive complexion, can I be offended when my wife uses makeup to darken her face to mimic a tan?

Obviously that’s not the same — I’m just thinking out loud, but it’s a tough issue that can’t be seen objectively anymore. It’s like flying the Confederate flag. It’s been co-opted so thoroughly by people with hatred in their hearts, you just can’t do it because your explanations will sound like lame excuses.

EDIT: 3 years ago, we “orange-faced” my son so he could be Trump for Halloween. Daughter was Hillary. Every 4-8 years, Halloween is awesome.

Yup, and good luck displaying a swastika and saying it’s referencing your Native American heritage. I was worried for a minute there that racists were going to ruin the “okay” symbol and the circle game...

https://www.cabq.gov/culturalservices/kimo/about-the-theatre/kimo-history/swastikas

Comedians should be given a wider berth, as their job is to test the limits of what’s acceptable, but have to tread lightly and be ready to face the consequences. The current backlash by many prominent comedians against the “gotcha” culture is pretty important, I think (but some take it too far). Kevin Hart losing the Oscars job was a crime; I’m glad he took a stand.

A classic:

Eddie Murphy did it better than anyone . The White Chicks movie was a sham in comparison.

But that whiteface stuff is comically acceptable ONLY because blackface existed for so long, and with horrible intent. I totally give it a pass.

If you haven’t seen Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special, give it a watch. Just buckle up, it’s all over the place on offensiveness.

It seems like it shouldn’t be inherently problematic, but given the historical context, there’s no way it is ok in practice, at least in the US. Other countries may not have the same historical baggage, so it might be weird to force our circumstances on to them, but I suspect nearly everywhere has a history of negative, mocking portrayals (or worse) of “ the other” , so I doubt it’s a good idea anywhere.

Kinja'd!!! Ash78, voting early and often > facw

I mean, I suppose there’s a context where some version of it is ok. If people are dressing up for a world culturally-theme party then maybe a little bronzer would be ok just to make the costume more believable. But never the shoe-polish black.

I posted this a while back, it’s a 90s episode of Mr. Show where Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) portrays an Indian guy who is ironically a member of a white supremacist group, along with several other unlikely members. This whole sketch is comic genius, but would probably get the axe today on the superficial aspects:

I would look at a person’s actions on matters involving race, creed, religion, sexuality, etc when things like these come up.

If their actions do not oppress or discriminate based on those things, I would chalk that up to a huge faux pas today, but something that people laughed at years ago.

I mean so many jokes on Friends and all jokes on Married ...with children
are pretty offensive today. But it was broadcast across America for years on TVin the 90s and 2000s .

Yes, he did. Didn’t see “White Chicks”...

Exactly, making fun of racism is a totally different thing, but you still have to be mindful about how you go about it.

I did watch Chappelle’s latest special - he clearly does not give even one fuck. His line at the end of the bit about why he couldn’t use the word “f—” on his show was pretty great. Plenty of the stuff was way over the line, but plenty of it made you think , and that’s a comedian’s job. And he’s rich enough, and couldn’t care less about his celebrity social status, so he’s got zero filter at this point on what he’s willing to say (and we need people like that in society).

Chapelle’s Show was brilliant, as if that needed to be said.

A few years ago I was surprised to learn that the Indian guy in Short Circuit was white. I don’t recall that being a mocking or negative portrayal at all, but it seems fundamentally very weird not to just hire an Indian actor.

Your wife painting a tan on her face would be offensive for a different reason than you wearing blackface or flying a Confederate flag.

Kinja'd!!!

Your wife walking around a San Gennaro festival  dressed and acting like Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny, while hot, would be offensive for the same reason.

Indian, Persian and Native American cultures still incorporate the symbol in artwork and clothing.

The difference is their use had nothing to do with the third reich, whereas the Confederate flag has everything to do with the Confederacy (it wasn’t coopted, some Southerners have a hard time understanding this, and blackface apparently ).

But one stupid mistake is more than enough to ruin a person’s political career.

Yes, plenty of cringey stuff was still being broadcast in the not too distant past. On the flip side, perhaps the general public is too easily offended today, too ready to be an accomplice in career homicide for the slightest mistake ...

Whiteface is fine, because whites were not historically oppressed by blacks and there’s no extensive negative history associated with it (as in minstrelry). It isn’t likely to harm or offend white people, and, if it does cause offense, it will only b e to a very small number of humorless jerks who’s opinions don’t matter anyway.

Ralph Northam only survived his blackface incident because:

The Leiutenant Governer had also done it, the Attorney General has an ongoing sexual assault investigation against him, the next guy in line after those 3 is a R epublican. The people screaming loudest for Northam’s head to roll backed off real quick once they looked at the most likely possible outcomes of his ouster.

Pretty surprising considering how accepting he seemingly is of different cultures. One could question whether or not he was even aware that what he was doing at the time could have been construed as being offensive nearly 20 years later.

As someone who generally leans left a bit myself, there’s definitely a trend more and more towards “I’m offended” culture. And there definitely is some irony in watching someone who more often than not aligns with that culture being caught on the wrong side of it.

But, Trump has already survived a lot worse... somewhat inexplicably to me, but he has. Just another round in the culture wars.

Not being American I don’t see the issue with the Jimmy Kimmel ones. Neither are mocking an ethnic background, the face paint is not really different from a realistic wig, realistic make up or costume. The picture on the left though, that one is much more questionable.

I do realize there is a historical context in the US though. That makes it more... Complicated.

Somewhat related, but earlier this year, an Asian makeup artist got into trouble for doing blackface. Her claim to fame is turning herself into famous figures, including Albert Einstein, the Mona Lisa, Taylor Swift, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Holland, etc.

Anyway, she’s Korean, so she wasn’t aware of the cultural taboo of blackface in the English-speaking world. For one of her videos she c hose to turn herself into a black supermodel. T o my knowledge, she wasn’t mimicking a specific person, just a general black supermodel to show off her makeup witchcraft . And I’m honestly conflicted about whether of not to be mad at her because the end result looks like a Vogue cover model.
